ATLANTA — Galen Rupp won his second straight US Olympic Marathon trials on Saturday afternoon, earning a spot on the team headed to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Rupp was the Bronze Medal winner in the Marathon at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.
Rupp pulled away from the lead pack during the final miles before crossing the finish line in Centennial Olympic Park, nearly 43 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Jacob Riley.
Rupp and Riley will be joined on the US Olympic Marathon team by Abdi Abdirahman, who finished third.
The women's trial was much closer, with Aliphine Tuliamuk finishing only seven seconds ahead of Molly Seidel. Sally Kipyego finished in third place.
The first three finishers in each trial earned berths on the United States Olympic team.
The 2020 Summer Olympic Games open in Tokyo on July 24, 2020.
