PARIS, France — It's a big day for University of Georgia and Georgia Tech graduate Nic Fink.
He will have a chance to go for his first Olympic gold on Sunday when he competes in the Men's 100m Breaststroke finals at 3:44 p.m. EST on NBC.
The American captain, Fink, will be competing against several talented swimmers, including British star Adam Peaty, returning from a long layoff to deal with mental health issues, signaling that he’s got a shot at a third straight gold in the men’s 100 breaststroke. The British star put up a time of 59.18 that left him just behind top qualifier Casper Corbeau of the Netherlands (59.04).
Fink advanced to the final with a time of 59.66. So, not only is this an outstanding opportunity for a Georgia swimmer to win gold, but also a major chance to add another gold medal for Team USA in swimming.
Athens was where it started for Fink – competing at UGA. He became an Olympian by competing at his first Games in Tokyo, where he placed fifth in the 200m breaststroke.
After the Summer Games in Tokyo, Nic moved to Georgia Tech to study for a master's degree in computer and electrical engineering -- where he also kept training with the team there.
Fink has gained a name for himself before the Olympics with his decorated World Championship experience. He holds at least 20 World Championship medals, including 13 gold medals.
He and his wife, Melanie -- another Olympian from UGA -- will soon welcome their first child.
