PARIS, France — She did it! U.S. gymnast Simone Biles completed an epic comeback on Thursday when she won the gold medal in the Paris Olympic gymnastics individual all-around competition.
Biles, who is the oldest Olympic women's gymnastic champ since 1952, is sharing the podium with teammate and also former all-around champion Suni Lee, who won bronze. Finishing between them with silver was Rebeca Andrade of Brazil.
The win means the United States has stood atop the podium in the women's all-around for six straight Olympics.
The competition came down to the last rotation, as Biles, Lee and Andrade competed on the floor exercise. Biles needed to score 13.867 to beat Andrade, and she easily topped the mark with 15.066.
That wasn't her highest rotation score of the day, though. She earned 15.766 on the vault after doing her signature Yurchenko double pike vault. She's the only woman to ever complete that vault in competition.
After the vault, she had her one big mistake of the competition on the uneven bars, when she botched a transition from the upper bar to the lower bar. The miscue messed with her momentum and forced her to muscle her way back into her routine. Her score of 13.733 dropped her behind Andrade after two rotations.
Meanwhile, Lee earned the highest score among the top three finishers on the uneven bars, as she got 14.866, compared with Biles' 13.77 and Andrade's 13.733.
