After their MLS Cup victory Saturday, Atlanta United made a subtle, yet important change to their logo -- by adding a single star above its crest.
Many soccer teams around the world include one or more stars as a part of their logos, usually symbolizing important victories or awards the teams have won.
The practice was an outgrowth of the existing convention which had the reigning champions displaying the 'scudetto' -- or 'little shield' -- honoring their championship win during the season following their championship victory.
This is a practice that originated with the Italian team Juventus, who added a single star above their badge in 1958 representing their tenth Italian Football Championship and Serie A title.
Several other MLS teams have added stars to their logos in a similar fashion to symbolize their MLS titles.
While most teams have added one star per title, the Los Angeles Galaxy includes a single gold star on their crest to symbolize their five MLS Cup titles.
