Copa América features 10 teams that are comprised of CONMEBOL -- the South American soccer federation -- as well as six other teams from the Western Hemisphere. This year, it is being played concurrently with the UEFA Euro 2024, a similar soccer tournament comprised of teams from Europe.
Which countries are represented in Copa América?
This year, the 16 countries that represent Copa América are as follows: United States, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela, and Uruguay
Why is the United States hosting Copa América?
Originally, the United States was not supposed to host Copa América. That was initially awarded to Ecuador, who was next in line to host. However, CONMEBOL decided that Ecuador needed to focus its resources on their country rather than soccer.
However, in January of last year, CONMEBOL and Concacaf—the governing body of soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean—announced a new partnership and chose the United States as the next Copa América host.
Why is Copa América a big deal?
Well, for one, Copa América only happens once every four years and features the best soccer players in all of North, South and Central America. It's even bigger this year because two matches are right here in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
