ATLANTA — One of the most well-known names in Atlanta United's franchise will have to undergo surgery for a significant injury from Saturday's game.
Atlanta United confirmed on Sunday that forward Josef Martinez suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Saturday's bout with the Nashville SC. While it's clear Martinez will undergo surgery, the date for that hasn't yet been determined.
And while the Five Stripes weren't specific on when he'll come back to the field, the organization did say that there would be a rehabilitation process to follow.
Saturday's game against the new Nashville team was Atlanta's season opener and a win. Atlanta United will have its first home game of the season on March 7.
The Associated Press reports Martinez was the 2018 MLS Golden Boot winner who had 27 goals last year.
