Team USA to play major soccer tournament match in Atlanta

It will be the first time the USMNT will play in Atlanta in nearly a decade.

ATLANTA — Team USA will be playing in Atlanta for one of the world's premier soccer tournaments.

Copa América 2024 will leave its home continent of South America to host games across the United States for the second time in tournament history. Promising an opening match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the stadium announced that two legendary teams will play at the Benz.

Argentina will play in the opening match on June 20. A group stage match on June 27 will feature the U.S. marking the first USMNT match in Atlanta since 2015. The final match of the tournament will be held in Miami.

The cup will be a competition between 16 teams - 10 CONMEBOL teams and six guests teams from the CONCACAF league. Both confederations organize the tournament.

Soccer legend Lionel Messi, a CONMEBOL record-setter, was recently called to represent the Argentine national team for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, fueling speculation that he could play for Argentina during Copa América, too - that is if he stays injury free. Atlanta is also slated to host a game during the global tournament as North America plays host.

It's not yet clear if Atlanta United standout and 2023 MLS Young Player of the Year Thiago Almada will play in the cup. Almada is the first MLS active player to win a World Cup, alongside Messi representing Argentina.

Argentina is the current Copa América champion. The tournament will take place from June 20 to July 14.
