CUMBERLAND, Ga. -- As the Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets prepare to meet for the series finale at SunTrust Park, they are on-track to set a new attendance record for the series.
The in-state rivals meet for the annual Spring Baseball Classic for Kids to benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta on Tuesday. It's the third game between the two schools this season.
The game, which used to be held at Turner Field, has attracted more than 19,000 fans annually and raised more than $200,000.
There has already been more than 21,100 ticket sold as of Monday afternoon. Tickets will also be sold at the gate for $15 on Tuesday. The game starts at 7 p.m.
Through ticket sales, $257,852 has been raised, which will be used for funding patient and family initiatives in the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Their goal was $250,000.
On April 9, Georgia faced Mizzou at SunTrust Park, and it drew a crowd of 33,025. It was the second-largest crowd for an NCAA baseball event. The record is 40,106 for a San Diego State baseball game at Petco Park. The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets would have to sell-out the 41,500-seat SunTrust Park to beat the record.
Georgia leads the Spring Baseball Classic series 9-5, and the all-time series 120-102. Georgia (19-29) has won the first two meetings with the Yellow Jackets (23-21) this season. They won 5-1 on April 11 and 7-5 on April 25.
