Georgia's early birds catch glimpse of SpaceX rocket

Viewers submitted photos of the rocket flying through the sky after its launch early Friday morning.

ATLANTA — Early Friday morning, SpaceX launched a rocket carrying four astronauts - including one with deep Atlanta ties - on their way to the International Space Station.

Liftoff for the mission happened a little before 6:00 a.m. in Cape Canaveral, Fla. - but that wasn't the only place to see a bit of the show.

11Alive viewers from around Georgia who were up bright and early (well, dark and early, actually, which is what helped them see the rocket) submitted their photos of the SpaceX Falcon 9 soaring through the sky.

Georgians looking to the sky were also catching one of their own on their way to space.

NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough is an alum of Atlanta's The Lovett School and also earned a master's degree from Georgia Tech. He was one of the four crew members on the launch, which was SpaceX's third with a crew.

The rocket is expected to reach the International Space Station on Saturday, where the astronauts will spend six months conducting experiments and performing maintenance on the space station.
