BUFORD, Ga. — New algae blooms that have popped up on Lake Lanier could potentially be harmful to people and pets, according to a nonprofit organization.
The Lake Lanier Association is warning those who venture into the north Georgia lake about the blooms, which can produce toxins that make people and animals sick.
The nonprofit urges people to stay out of the water if you see conditions in the lake that turns the water green and murky, just like it would look in the photo below:
But what is the cause of this?
The Lake Lanier Association said this is happening because it has been warmer than usual at this time of the year, added with the fact that there has been so little rain.
Gwinnett County officials said the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper sent them water samples, but it is recommending those samples be sent to a third-party lab that can accurately test for algae toxins.
