ATLANTA — Slash or scream! The Halloween commute turned into a nightmare for many drivers after a person dressed in a Ghostface costume from the iconic 1996 movie "Scream" set up shop in the middle of the Interstate. It brought traffic to a "screeching" halt on the Downtown Connector in Atlanta Tuesday evening, just in time for the Halloween rush home.
Georgia Department of Transportation cameras showed the person appearing to stand on top of a black sedan holding a sign with a knife, causing a major slowdown in the southbound lanes of the Connector at Williams Street, near the Spring Street exit.
11Alive reached out to Atlanta police for a comment and the department said officers were responding to investigate. They eventually moved the person just around 5:15 p.m., but the costumed person had been parked there already nearly an hour, causing major backups on both I-75 and I-85 south.
11Alive's Traffic Expert Crash Clark said that traffic heading south on I-75 before the Connector was backed up all the way to the Moore's Mill exit. Meanwhile, traffic heading south on I-85 was backed up all the way to GA-400, north of the Connector.
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes if they want to avoid the slowdown, which could have residents late to Trick-or-Treating plans. Check 11Alive.com/traffic for more real-time traffic information.
