Atlanta to study congestion fees, other ways to fight traffic

The City of Atlanta is looking to fight back against traffic and you could help foot the bill.

ATLANTA — The City of Atlanta is looking to fight back against traffic and you could help foot the bill.

The Atlanta City Council has passed a resolution to study a plan to charge a congestion fee for drivers entering the city.

Councilmen J.P. Matzigkeit, Dustin Hills, and Matt Westmoreland are behind the resolution, that also seeks other ideas for addressing traffic in the city.

It asks the Atlanta Department of City Planning to study the source of traffic in Northwest Atlanta and ways to address it as part of the Atlanta Transportation Plan.

The resolution points to heavy travel on residential streets, that are not designed for the volume of commuters they see and safety concerns from people that live in the areas.

It cites West Paces Ferry Road, Moores Mill Road, Northside Drive, Mt. Paran Road, Roswell Road, Howell Mill, West Wesley Road and Bolton Road as areas of concern.

A report is due by July 1 and it's still unclear exactly how the city plans to move forward with any of the suggested plans.
