Drivers say Candler Road pothole is damaging vehicles

Drivers said that a pothole on Candler Road in Decatur has caused a few cars to need back-to-back repairs.

DECATUR, Ga. — Pothole problems don't care about county lines.

11Alive brought viewers a story last week regarding damages to vehicles due to a pothole in Coweta County, and now the same incident happened in DeKalb County.

Drivers said that a pothole on Candler Road in Decatur has caused a few cars to need back-to-back repairs.

"We were just driving," Brook Cobb said. "And I noticed the car in front of me swerved."

The car before her made it out, but it was too late for Cobb and her friend.

"We both looked at each other in silence," she said.

Cobb braced herself for the worst, and the next day, she woke up with a flat tire and a broken rim. Another driver said the same thing happened to him on the same day, making this the second complaint to 11Alive within two weeks.

"It is very unfortunate because I was fixing my entire next semester: having my car, being able to go to my programs and different things I signed up for," Cobb said. "So, now, I'm trying to, 'Oh, maybe I can find a virtual option, but that's kind of unfair.'"

Cobb said her mom and dad are helping her get the car out of the shop.

The Georgia Department of Transportation wants drivers to know they can file a claim and tells drivers to call 511 and report the location and issue. GDOT also added that drivers can also report potholes they run into online using the steps below.

  • To report a pothole in the road, go to the GDOT’s website.
  • Then click on “Travel Info and Data”.
  • Next, click on “Report a Pothole”.
  • Finally, click on “Let’s Connect” and complete the information.

"Potholes are definitely a big issue in Atlanta," Cobb said. "So, maybe just more urgency with getting them fixed -- not just letting them continue to damage people's cars."

Drivers can file a police report or a claim as well.
