GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A driver is likely to face charges after hitting and killing a construction worker early Friday morning.
On Feb. 9, Peter Rozboril struck and killed 42-year-old Lamar Ragland around 5 a.m. on I-85 North near the I-985 North split.
Ragland, a construction worker, was removing barrels from the end of the closure as it was about to reopen, Gwinnett County Police said. Rozboril entered the closed lane with “intent to exit on I-985N” and hit Ragland.
Police said Ragland was wearing a reflective jacket and helmet at the time.
Ragland was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. He died the following day.
Rozboril remained at the scene and spoke with investigators, telling them he realized he was in the construction zone and was in the process of merging back into traffic when the accident happened.
Police said charges will be forthcoming and will most likely include homicide by vehicle and traffic charges. 11Alive's Natisha Lance texted with Ragland's brother, who declined speaking just yet out of grief. However, he did say he wanted people to know about the dangers workers are exposed to on a regular basis.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, 609 workers were killed across the country between 2011 and 2015. There were five in Georgia, with at least one last year.
