One dead after car crashes through fence onto I-20, slams into another driver

Both drivers have been identified and charges are pending for the one who survived.

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — One driver is dead and another possibly facing charges after a car ran through a right-of-way fence and slammed into a car on I-20, Saturday.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, troopers were called to the area of I-20 just east of West Avenue in Conyers around 1:20 p.m. to investigate a deadly accident. Preliminary findings suggest that a Nissan Rogue driven by 40-year-old Darrel Pickett was heading north on Royal Drive when it ran a stop sign, went over a guardrail and ran over a fence before heading onto I-20.

The Nissan then hit a Toyota Camry heading east on the interstate, killing the driver. The GSP later identified the deceased motorist as 52-year-old Joyce Polk of Covington.

Pickett, who faces charges pending the outcome of the GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT), was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment though his exact injuries weren’t released.

Following the crash, eastbound lanes of I-20 were shut down for quite some time as authorities investigated the cause and cleared the scene. The backup forced drivers to take Covington Highway to bypass the scene for hours or risk a lengthy wait.
