ATLANTA — Traffic came to a halt Friday night on the Downtown Connector after multiple crashes were reported.
According to Atlanta Police, in one accident in the northbound lanes of I-75/85 at 17th Street, at about 10:20 p.m., they discovered an accident with injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicates a female driver driving northbound on the Downtown Connector was rear-ended near 17th Street in the midst of heavy stop-and-go traffic.
The driver exited her vehicle, along with her passenger, who was her mother.
Investigators said the driver of the second also got out of their vehicle to inspect the damage, while both vehicles were in the traffic lanes.
Moments later, police said, struck the second vehicle from behind, which caused a chain reaction, striking all three individuals standing outside their vehicles on the interstate.
Everyone involved was transported to Atlanta Medical Center for further medical treatment.
Investigators said it appears that one of the female victims who was struck, suffered serious injuries to her lower extremities. Initial police reports indicated the injuries "consisted of possible amputation of both of her feet."
Others complained of minor injuries. A Georgia Department of Transportation camera showed emergency crews a the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the wreck remain under investigation.
