MARIETTA, Ga. — After severe traffic delays, I-75 North near Canton Road in Marietta has reopened after a dump truck hit an overhead sign structure Wednesday afternoon.
For several hours, GDOT511 showed all lanes were blocked on the northbound side. Crews worked to clean up the interstate for several hours.
Marietta Police diverted traffic due to the debris on the interstate.
In an update, police said the driver of a fully loaded dump truck was traveling south on I-75 -- when the driver lost control and struck the GDOT sign, which was attached to the median.
Authorities said the sign extended in the opposite direction and supported large signage for the northbound lanes. The structure was damaged and it collapsed onto the northbound lanes.
A citation was issued to the driver for traveling in the non-commercial lanes and may face other fees or citations from GDOT and Motor Carrier Compliance (MCC), according to Marietta Police.
As of Wednesday night, the sign and structure were removed. All lanes reopened around 8:10 p.m.
11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene, where damage was seen on the side of the dump truck and a concrete barrier. There was also debris from the sign littering the grass.

How to get around
Drivers were strongly encouraged to use an alternate route. Officials urged drivers to sue US 41 NB/ Cobb Pkwy as an alternate. Additionally, drivers heading to Cherokee County could take GA 400 over to SR 92. Peach Pass holders were also able to use the northwest corridor express lanes.
