Memorial Day weekend travel expected to be highest on record | Best time to fill up with gas

About 1.3 million are expected to travel for the long weekend.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — This weekend kicks off the summer travel season as Memorial Day shapes into full swing.

AAA explained that more people than ever are expected to take advantage of the three-day holiday weekend by getting out onto the roads and traveling.

If you are one of the people choosing to drive to your vacation destination, gas prices are an important factor in calculating the cost of your trip.

About 1.2 million folks are expected to drive more than 50 miles this holiday weekend, according to AAA.

AAA spokesperson Montrae Waiters said the best time to fill up is right now but that you definitely want to top the tank off within the next few days.

"We're looking at a 13-cent difference from what it was last year. For folks that haven’t already hit the road I would tell you to go out and fill up now. Definitely fill up within the next couple of days,” Waiters said.

Waiters explained that the average price for a gallon of gas in Georgia is $3.38 and that could go up a few cents depending on crude oil prices and demand.

Devon Lewis said sticker shock at the pump is a factor in whether or not he hits the road.

“If gas was 87 cents, then yes, I would be outside, but since gas is almost four dollars, no, we’re gonna hold it right here at the crib,” he said.

According to GasBuddy, gas prices are expected to fall over the next couple of months, and the Fourth of July weekend should be more affordable; however, hurricane season could impact Labor Day prices.

Waiters also said AAA expects to rescue about 300,000 with roadside assistance during the holiday weekend.
