TREUTLEN COUNTY, Ga. — If you are heading to or from Savannah to the metro Atlanta area, you'll need to take note of a major detour.
A truck crashed into a Georgia bridge and shifted it six feet, requiring the closure of a stretch of interstate between Macon and Savannah early Thursday.
The incident happened on I-16 in Treutlen County. The interstate is now closed between Exit 71 and Exit 78.
Crews have already begun demolishing the bridge. The plan is to open one lane westbound from Savannah to Macon by Sunday and open lane eastbound by Monday.
GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry said depending on how the demolition goes, I-16 is expected to fully re-open by mid to late next week.
