SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The massive $80-million project to overhaul the interchange of Interstate 285 and Georgia 400 has reached its final phase, and drivers are eager to see it end.
For seven years, Ed Willis has dealt with the constant changes while on his way to work at Gruby’s New York Deli. He finds it hard to believe the frequent lane closures and ramp alterations are coming to an end.
“Several times my co-workers and I have missed the exit due to a new exit opening or an exit closing,” said Willis. “I’m sure they’ll change it up again in another five years.”
According to data collected by the Georgia Department of Transportation, 1.4 million drivers travel through the area each week, an 18 % increase over the past decade.
Efforts to accommodate the growth began in 2017.
“The main work has been completed,” said GDOT’s Natalie Dale. “All lanes are in their final configuration. All ramps are in their final configuration. So if you’ve had a time over the past few years figuring out where your exit is, where it is now is where it’s going to stay.”
You could still find flashing lights in your path if you travel in the dark. Crews have until November to complete the final touches.
“Small lane closures that may happen,” said Dale. “We try to do those overnight for barrier wall work, things like that.”
Ed Willis is among the drivers who find it difficult to believe the project is finally approaching an end.
“I’ll be thankful but, I’ll believe it when I see it,” said Willis.
GDOT will add tolled Express Lanes to the area. The project is still in the planning stages, and work won’t begin soon, but as one project ends, another one is on the horizon.
