SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — (UPDATE 6:15 a.m. on Thursday): Currently, all five westbound lanes are back open, but the overpass remains closed.
At this time, the Mt. Vernon Highway bridge inspection is ongoing. GDOT, in collaboration with contract crews, is working to install protective forms below the bridge.
Motorists should plan on two outside I-285 westbound travel lanes remaining closed until Thursday morning as work continues to inspect and secure the area. The Mt. Vernon Bridge will also remain closed to all traffic during the ongoing bridge analysis.
GDOT has shared the detour pictured below:
(UPDATE 3:30 p.m.): Two left lanes are now open.
Meanwhile, the city of Sandy Springs reports on Facebook that the Mount Vernon Hwy. bridge itself will remain closed "for the time being."
"Additionally, a detour route has been set up and marked by Public Works crews. More information will follow as the situation develops," the city said.
(UPDATE: 2:37 p.m.): Only the far left lane continues to remain open. A GDOT "anticipated end time" is listed for 3:30 p.m.
(UPDATE: 1:05 p.m.): Sandy Springs Police says the Mount Vernon Hwy. bridge was hit by a tractor trailer carrying an excavator, causing the problem.
Georgia Department of Transportation personnel were en route to inspect the bridge.
One left lane on I-285 West is currently open and Mount Vernon Hwy. is closed.
Backup on I-285 West is now stretching back as far as North Peachtree Road.
(UPDATE 12:32 p.m.): The eastbound lanes have reopened, and it appears traffic is being allowed through for westbound traffic in one far left lane.
Westbound backup is beginning to stretch about as far as Ashford Dunwoody Road.

All of I-285 is closed in Sandy Springs after damage to an overpass bridge, the city said on social media.
The Georgia Department of Transportation also posted that there was debris on the roadway and crews on site.
There's no indication of how long the closure might need to last or how serious the bridge situation might be.
