MCDONOUGH, Ga. — One person died in a crash along I-75 North near McDonough early Thanksgiving morning, Georgia State Patrol said.
It happened just south of North McDonough Road/GA-155 after 5 a.m.
According to GSP, the incident began when a tractor-trailer struck a Toyota SUV from behind and then it jackknifed, blocking all three lanes of the interstate.
In an update, troopers said a second tractor-trailer was traveling north when it hit the first tractor-trailer. Investigators said this caused the first tractor-trailer to jackknife across all lanes. A driver in a Dodge Charger ended up rear-ending a tractor-trailer, which caused the deadly impact, GSP said.
The driver of the second tractor-trailer swerved right to avoid the crash and ended up in a ditch, troopers said. GSP said its investigation remains ongoing.
A Georgia Department of Transportation alert earlier stated: "Emergency responders are on scene working to clear the crash. Motorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes."
Drivers were advised to continue north by getting off I-75 at Bill Gardner Parkway and traveling up north along US-23/GA-42.
The interstate was then cleared and reopened around 1:30 p.m.
