Major crash on I-75 in Atlanta kills 1, injures 6: GSP

It happened Friday afternoon.

ATLANTA — One person is dead, and six people are injured following a major crash that involved seven vehicles that has I-75 south shut down in Atlanta at Northside Drive on Friday afternoon, Georgia State Patrol said.

It happened a little after 1:30 p.m., according to GDOT, and its estimated end time was 4 p.m., but that estimated end time has been extended as crews continue to work to clear the crash.

GSP said that troopers were called out to the crash around 1:35 p.m. on Friday. The investigation revealed that all seven vehicles were driving in the fourth lane of I-75 south when traffic began moving around a broken-down Pontiac -- but that's when GSP said traffic suddenly stopped.

Two Freightliner CMVs crashed into a white Ford Transit van, which then collided with a Hyundai sedan, which then hit a Toyota Corolla, causing it to overturn, before it hit an Audi A4. GSP said the Freightliner steering left crashed into the overturned Ford. The driver of the Toyota Corolla was tragically killed in the accident.

All six people injured were taken to the hospital for their injuries. It's unclear what the extent of the injuries is at this time.

Video from the scene showed at least one overturned utility vehicle of some kind, and another utility vehicle with two smaller vehicles sandwiched in between.

"Avoid travel in this direction and use alt. routes," a GDOT post said.

Traffic cameras showed multiple first responder vehicles on scene.

Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency said it would take a "long duration, greater than 2 hours" to clear.
