GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — UPDATE: Southbound lanes have opened on I-85. Northbound lanes continue to be diverted at Indian Trail Lilburn Road.
UDPATE 2: I-85 North is also now open.
Original story below
Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County is shut down in both directions Tuesday morning as SWAT units respond to an armed passenger on a Greyhound bus.
The bus is sitting along the entrance ramp at Indian Trail Road Lilburn Road, causing the interstate to be blocked in both directions.
Just after noon, an alert went out to phones notifying people of the public safety situation and advising them to avoid I-85.
Gwinnett County Police say those traveling north should exit off I-85 at Jimmy Carter Boulevard, a few miles south of Indian Trail Lilburn Road, and those traveling south should exit at Beaver Ruin Road to the north of the situation.
- For those traveling south, the best way to go south and return to the interstate is to probably take Beaver Ruin Road all the way to Buford Highway, then continue on Buford Highway all the way to I-285, before taking I-285 East back to I-85 South.
- For those traveling north, you can similarly take Jimmy Carter Blvd. west to Buford Highway and go north on Buford Highway up to Pleasant Hill Road, then take that road east back to I-85 North at Gwinnett Place. Another option would be to take Jimmy Carter Blvd. down to Lawrenceville Highway, up to Pleasant Hill Road and then east back to I-85.
- If you're inside the Perimeter traveling north, you can aim to get to Buford Highway via I-285 West, or even farther back from there, via Clairmont Road. You can also go the opposite way if you want to avoid Buford Highway backup, which will likely start to set in, by taking Clairmont Road to Lawrenceville Highway and continuing north to Pleasant Hill Road.
- If you want to avoid Buford Highway, you could also take the longer option of traveling on I-285 West to Peachtree Industrial Blvd. to go north to Pleasant Hill Road or, even farther back, taking GA-400 to Peachtree Road on north to where it turns into Peachtree Industrial.
It's unclear how long the SWAT situation will last, so plan ahead if you have to travel north or south through Gwinnett County on Tuesday.
