Ice on I-85 causes 22 car pileup near Spaghetti Junction; road reopens after more than 2 hours

It was closed for more than two hours on Sunday.

ATLANTA — A crash had all southbound lanes blocked on Interstate 85 for nearly two-and-a-half hours Sunday morning. DeKalb County Police said it involved 22 cars when a "burst waterline" that froze on the highway.

It happened on I-85 just before Chamblee-Tucker Road near Spaghetti Junction. Around 7 a.m., several emergency vehicles were on the scene and holding all traffic. The I-285 westbound exit to I-85 south was also closed. 

Drivers were urged to use Buford Highway or Peachtree Industrial Boulevard as an alternate. The Georgia Department of Transportation initially said the roadway wouldn't be clear until at least 10:45 a.m. By 9:30 a.m., traffic was seen flowing again.

There were no major injuries, police said.
