ATLANTA — Over 40 million people are anticipated to travel worldwide during July 4 weekend, and Atlanta is expected to see some of that impact, according to the American Automobile Association.
With many people on the road, and many traveling through metro Atlanta, the Georgia Department of Transportation has predicted travel patterns for the week.
Traffic patterns for July 1 - 5
Friday, July 1
The weekend will start with heavy traffic beginning around noon. Drivers might want to avoid metro Atlanta interstates until 8 p.m. as traffic will be the heaviest on July 1.
Saturday, July 2
Traffic will ease up by a hair during the weekend; however, drivers should consider inbound congestion from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday, July 3
By Sunday, the roads will have returned to normal. Travelers will be happy to learn that light traffic is expected.
Monday, July 4
Here is another excellent reason to celebrate the Fourth of July — low traffic volumes are expected.
Tuesday, July 5
Drivers who plan to travel back home are encouraged to get on the road during the morning as moderate traffic is anticipated during the afternoon until 7 p.m.

Travelers will be happy to learn that GDOT has taken measures to reduce traffic over the holiday weekend.
From July 1 to July 5, some Georgia interstates and state routes normally closed due to construction work will be open.
GDOT encourages travelers to be safe on the road by staying alert, being mindful of speeding and driving under the influence.
