ATLANTA — Georgia drivers preparing for Memorial Day road trips can anticipate better traffic patterns during the busy weekend.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending all interstate lane closures on highways and state routes beginning Friday, May 24, at noon until Tuesday, May 28, at 5 a.m.
Areas surrounding tourist attractions such as Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, Six Flags over Georgia, Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta Botanical Gardens and Piedmont Park may experience an increase in traffic.
According to GDOT, travelers can expect traffic to be heavier than usual for the following streets on Thursday and Friday:
- SR 3N/Cobb Parkway
- SR 141 N/Peachtree Road
- SR 140 NE/Jimmy Carter Boulevard
- SR 3 West Central/Northside Drive
- SR 8 East Central/Ponce De Leon Avenue
- SR 42 E/Moreland Avenue
- SR 154 SE/Memorial Drive
- SR 35 S/US Hwy 19
Despite construction closures being suspended, drivers will still see very heavy congestion on I-20 eastbound, I-75 southbound and northbound, I-24 eastbound, and I-16 westbound and eastbound. However, there will be light traffic on I-20 westbound as well as I-95 northbound and southbound.
Lighter-than-usual traffic flow is expected on Saturday May 25, Sunday May 26, as well as Memorial Day on May 27.
