Lanes are closed on Interstate 75 in Marietta after a semi-truck hauling barrels of brake fluid crashed into a support beam under the Windy Hill bridge and caught fire early Friday morning.

As of about 7 a.m., traffic already in the area was moving slowly through one far right lane around the incident scene. Other traffic is being diverted at Delk Road, and delays are stretching far up through Cobb County, about as far as where I-575 feeds into I-75.

The accident happened around 3 a.m. in the southbound lanes near the SR 280/Delk Road exit, causing significant delays during the early morning rush hour.

Initial reports from Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services said the truck's cargo barrels began leaking, burning and exploding after the crash. The fire has since been extinguished, and the Cobb County HazMat team is currently on scene mitigating the chemical spill.

Fortunately, fire officials said no other vehicles were involved in the incident, and the truck driver appears uninjured. Additionally, no firefighter injuries have been reported.

Cobb County Fire posted a video of when crews first responded to the scene:

The Marietta Police Department is advising drivers to avoid the area. Traffic is being diverted off at Delk Road, with drivers able to re-enter the interstate at the next exit. However, 11Alive Traffic Expert Crash Clark recommends using Highway 41/Cobb Parkway or Powers Ferry Road as alternate routes.

The Georgia Department of Transportation initially expected to clear the lanes by 5:15 a.m., but due to the ongoing cleanup efforts, this has been extended to 7 a.m.
