Utility truck driver life-flighted to Grady after crash involving Spalding County fire engine, pickup truck: GSP

The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m., not far from Minter Road.

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — A utility truck driver was life-flighted to Grady after a crash on North Expressway/SR 3, just north of Birdie Road, in Spalding County Thursday afternoon, according to Georgia State Patrol.

All northbound lanes were blocked for several hours after a crash involving a bucket truck, a fire engine and a Dodge pickup truck. The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m., not far from Minter Road.

Troopers said that the fire truck was responding to a nearby crash that happened on the southbound lanes of the expressway with its emergency lights on. That's when the driver of a utility bucket truck hit the back of the fire truck, causing it to overturn and trap the driver of the utility truck.

GSP added that the impact of the crash caused the firetruck to travel into the median before it hit a grey Dodge pickup that was unable to stop because of the initial crash.

No one was in the fire truck when the crash happened, according to GSP. The Spalding County Fire Department added that no one from their department was injured in the crash.

In an update, troopers said the driver of the utility truck was extricated and life-flighted to Grady. There was also a passenger in the utility truck, who was uninjured and the driver of the Dodge pickup truck had minor injuries.

The expressway reopened shortly before 6 p.m.
