GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — An overturned gasoline tanker truck that shut down a road in Gwinnett County and led to a fuel leak has been removed, officials said.
Gwinnett County Fire officials said the truck and the mess was removed, and the road reopened at around 5:54 p.m., nearly 12 hours after it happened.
According to Gwinnett Fire officials, the truck crash happened around 5:30 a.m. at Braselton Highway and Hamilton Mill Road. Police were forced to redirect traffic in the area.
The truck, according to officials, was carrying 85,000 gallons of fuel and nearly 3,000 gallons spilled out.
Hazmat technicians, officials said, worked to stop the leak and "contain the runoff."
Firefighters established a "500-foot hot zone" and were working to learn how much of the fuel may have entered into a nearby storm drain, officials said in a statement. It is unclear how much fuel leaked into the storm drains at this time, but one pond close by, that gets water from the drain, does have some gas in it, according to officials.
Two nearby gas stations - a QuikTrip and BP - were also evacuated, and a representative from the Gwinnett County Department of Water Services also responded, a fire official said. A nearby daycare also closed out of precaution, officials said.
The driver of the truck was evaluated and released at the scene by paramedics.
