GREENE COUNTY, Ga. — Several cows are dead after a tractor-trailer caught on fire on I-20 east in Greensboro Tuesday afternoon, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office requested help with the fire at 12:05 p.m. Greene County firefighters responded to put out the flames.

Officials said the rear axles of a livestock trailer caught on fire -- while the driver was hauling cows. The driver of the tractor-trailer opened the trailer's doors to try to save as many cows as possible, the Georgia Department of Public Safety said.

Officials added some residents jumped into action with several horses, ATVs and a cattle corral to help wrangle the rest of the roaming cows.

In an update, the Georgia Department of Public Safety said the interstate has reopened and the remaining cows were pushed near a pasture south of the interstate on a dirt road. Crews worked to herd the rest of the cows there, officials added.

In total, Greene County Fire Rescue said four cows died and 39 cows survived after the fire.
