Atlanta -- This weekend 17,000 athletes will take to the streets to compete in the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon which could cause several traffic delays.

Events for the race kick off Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st at the AmericasMart building 1 on the 2nd floor for the Health and Fitness Expo. Early Sunday morning runners and wheelchair athletes will gather at Centennial Olympic park for all races including the wheelchair division, the half marathon, the Luckie 5k and the full marathon.

All participants are encouraged to arrive early with races beginning at 6:55 am for the wheelchair division, the half marathon and full marathon with begin at 7 am and the Luckie 5k starts at 7:30. Not all roads along the course will be completely closed to thru traffic but expect delays along the entire course route. At 2 pm the finish line will be closed and police will reopen all lanes to thru traffic along the entire course route.

Expect delays in the following areas; around Centennial Olympic park and off the connector southbound at Williams Street, 5 Points, GSU campus, Candler Park, Eastlake, Decatur, North Decatur, Druid Hills, Virginia Highlands, Piedmont Park, Midtown and Georgia Tech.

With weather expected to improve for Saturday the DOT will also be out with major projects on I-20 eastbound and westbound (west expressway) near MLK, Langhorn and Lee Street also on Georgia 400 southbound at Lenox. Race official encourage participants to take MARTA or expect delays around Centennial Olympic Park.
