Lanes reopen after car engulfed in flames causes large brush fire near I-285 at MLK Drive

Lanes slowly opened back up as crews and Atlanta Police officers redirected traffic, but a huge backlog is causing a major slowdown.

ATLANTA — A traffic backlog is causing a major headache for drivers during rush hour after several incidents on I-285 northbound at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on Monday afternoon.

Atlanta Fire officials said crews responded to the area just around 3:26 p.m. to a two-car accident and a working car fire.

When they arrived at the scene, they found the car fire had extended to a brush, resulting in a large brush fire on 294 Brownlee Road SW.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze while emergency crews responded to the crash. Police said one person complained of pain while the occupants in the other car ran away from the scene.

Lanes slowly opened back up as crews and Atlanta Police officers redirected traffic.

The 11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene, where several fire trucks could be seen on the road cleaning up the fire. Traffic was also backed up for miles.

11Alive's Crash Clark advised drivers to take the connector northbound through the city to avoid the traffic.
