ATLANTA — The unofficial start to the summer will once again bring traffic and congestion back to the highways.
AAA expects a significant rebound in the number of Americans who plan to travel this Memorial Day weekend. AAA estimates more than 37 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles for the holiday. That's a 60% increase from 2020 when only 23 million traveled.
With the growing crowds at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, you can expect traffic starting as early as Thursday afternoon, with traffic volumes increasing as travelers head out of town.
Traditionally, Thursday afternoons are a brutal taste of what’s to come for a Friday afternoon rush hour so anytime after Thursday at noon, expect to see an increase on the downtown connector, the perimeter and routes heading to Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina.
Friday will most likely be the heaviest. However, some good news for commuters, the Georgia Department of Transportation will suspend its construction related lane closures beginning at noon Friday until 5 a.m. Tuesday.
While crews may still be present, there will not be any lane closures during the holiday weekend.
Additionally, be prepared for delays driving back into the metro Atlanta area on Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon, especially along I-75 North from Locust Grove through downtown Atlanta.
As a precaution before you hit the road, inspect your car for the following;
- 1. Check your car's cattery
- 2. Inspect belts and hoses
- 3. Top off fluids and replace filters
- 4. Verify lights and electrical equipment are working
- 5. Check the brakes
- 6. Inspect tires
Also, be mindful of other drivers and obey all posted speed limits, especially in construction zones whether they appear active or not.
Be sure to pay attention and stay alert while driving, which means avoid any driving distractions like eating, unless you’re a passenger.
Put the cell phones down and make sure to wear your seatbelt, both are Georgia laws.
If you experience a breakdown or accident stay with your car, if you are able, until help arrives.
If you need help, dial 511 to be immediately connected with the Traffic Management Center where you can request HERO or CHAMP assistance anywhere in Georgia.
Have a safe Memorial Day weekend on the roads and #ArriveAlive!
