ATLANTA — Cobb County Police are investigating a shooting that happened along the interstate Wednesday afternoon.
According to officers, they responded to I-75 North, just north of Wade Green Road, regarding a tractor-trailer blocking the roadway.
"They responded and the driver had been shot multiple times, at least twice," Sgt. Wayne Delk with Cobb County Police Department said. The sergeant added that the man was struck in the torso.
Delk said the driver had been shot by another motorist, who officers said left the scene. Authorities do not have a description of the vehicle or the other driver at this point in the investigation, according to Delk. Investigators are working to determine a motive.
The man who was hurt was taken to a local hospital conscious but with serious life-threatening injuries, Delk said.
Now, authorities are trying to find witnesses or tips to help piece together what led up to the shooting.
"We're hoping that someone saw something and will come forward," Delk added. "Obviously, this was in the middle of the day so there was traffic on the roadway. Hopefully, someone saw something and they'll call us."
Delk also said investigators are hoping video of the incident will surface soon, adding footage is often key evidence the agency doesn't have easy access to.
"The big push is for video. We as a police agency, and most police agencies, don't have video set up on the interstate systems," he explained. "What we really rely on is for eyewitnesses and obviously for our victims to give us good concrete descriptions."
Delk said the biggest help would be if a witness can offer a vehicle type or even a tag number.
"That would be fantastic," he said.
The Georgia Department of Transportation tweeted about the incident, saying all northbound lanes were blocked at the time. GDOT cameras showed the incident causing major delays on the interstate. A 2:30 p.m. update from GDOT said all lanes are now clear and travel is flowing again.
Traffic initially looked backed up all the way down the interstate's northbound lanes until the Town Center at Cobb shopping center.
Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area.
