Wrong-way interstate driver blamed for 4-car crash in Cherokee County

The driver believed at-fault for the crash was briefly trapped in the wreckage, officials say.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A wrong-way driver is accused of causing a major accident on I-575 early Wednesday morning.

According to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, they were called to the interstate just north of Hickory Flat Highway around 7 a.m. There, they found the aftermath of a man who investigators believe was traveling north in the southbound lanes of the highway.

The result was a four-vehicle accident that, according to firefighters, left the wrong-way driver trapped in his vehicle. Authorities said he was eventually rescued and taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for evaluation. Officials said he was the only one injured in the crash.

The resulting cleanup, however, shut down the southbound lanes for over an hour as crews removed the damaged vehicles and debris.  Hours later, the roads are clear again, but the accident remains under investigation.
