ATLANTA — The South Economy parking lot at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officially closed for the long haul Monday morning, Oct. 23, with the loss of 3,000 spaces at the airport creating a new crunch for travelers.
Fortunately, there remain lots of options for parking and getting to your flight with relative ease.
Here's an overview of what you can do:
Atlanta Airport parking options as South lot closes
Where to start
You can go to myparkatl.com/AtlantaBooking to pull up quotes for various lots, tailored to your travel duration, and make a reservation in advance.
This will include rates for the ParkATL Select park-and-ride lots, the ATL West deck and International Terminal park-and-ride.
- North Lots: It wouldn't be recommended that you count on these, as these lots are nearly always full, but there's always a chance. Be attentive here, also - there are hourly spots that may become available but they're meant to be short-term, and daylong rates cost a lot more than for other spots.
- ATL West Deck: This is slightly off-site at 4199 Skytrain Way, but if you park here you can take the Skytrain just a short ride over to the domestic terminals. As noted above, you can book a spot for this lot in advance at myparkingatl.com.
- ATL Select park-and-ride: Located at 1800 Sullivan Road, these lots (also known as Lots A, B and C) are the airport's official park-and-ride lots and will give you access via a short shuttle ride. They can be booked on the myparkingatl.com site, as well.
- International parking: One trick frequent ATL flyers know about is that you can go through international security and take the Plane Train back to the domestic terminals if you have a domestic flight. Again, though, be careful here - there is a large deck right next to the terminal but it's predominantly hourly spots that will cost your more for daily rates. Your better option if you go this route is the International park-and-ride lot which, like the other park-and-ride lots, offers reasonably quick shuttle service to the terminal. International park-and-ride can also be booked at myparkingatl.com.
MARTA
MARTA offers breezy access to the airport, and several stations have long-term parking availability (click here for more info) at solidly cheaper rates than you'll find right at the airport. Those include:
- For $5 daily rate: Dunwoody and Sandy Springs
- For $8 daily rate: College Park, Doraville, Lindbergh and North Springs
The College Park station, for reference, is just one stop (two miles) away from Hartsfield-Jackson.
Private park-and-ride lots
There are lots of these dotting the area around the airport, mostly clustered along Camp Creek Parkway. You can Google around for options, but some of them include:
Several of the above also service the International terminal, and other international options include Fast Park and Way.
Fear not - as you can see, if you plan ahead you've still got lots of options.
