Delta flight diverted back to Atlanta airport after 'smoky odor' detected in cabin, airline says

ATLANTA — A Delta flight was diverted back to the Atlanta airport on Wednesday after a "smoky odor" was detected in the cabin, according to a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines.

According to the airline, Delta flight 4955 took off from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and was heading to Montgomery, Alabama. Two pilots, two flight attendants and 57 passengers were onboard. 

The flight, operated by Endeavor Air, followed procedures to return to Atlanta after detecting the odor. The spokesperson said the flight landed safely back to the Atlanta airport at 12:45 p.m.

As nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, the flight crew of Delta Connection flight 4955 operated by Endeavor Air followed procedures to return to Atlanta after a smoky odor was detected in the cabin. Customers will be accommodated on another aircraft departing this afternoon and we apologize to them for the delay in their travels.

Over the weekend, Delta also diverted two additional flights due to mechanical problems.
