GDOT suspends lane closures to ease holiday travel, offers tips to drivers

Construction-related lane closures will be suspended on major highways and state routes during the Thanksgiving travel period.
Happy 4th of July! Here's what you can expect in terms of travel rush for the holiday week.

ATLANTA — If you’re traveling on the roads for the holidays, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is making the trip a bit easier.

Construction-related lane closures will be lifted on major highways and state routes from 5 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, through 10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion and help drivers reach their destinations with less hassle.

GDOT has also created a forecast for drivers to navigate holiday travel.

Thanksgiving travel forecast

  • Monday, Nov. 25, and Tuesday, Nov. 26: Traffic will pick up but stay moderate.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 27: Expect the heaviest traffic between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving Day), and Friday, Nov. 29: Roads will be lighter, offering smooth travel conditions.
  • Saturday, Nov. 30: Moderate traffic returns, peaking between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, Dec. 1: Traffic will be heavy, with a higher risk of crashes, especially in the evening.

For drivers heading outside metro Atlanta, watch for delays along I-20, I-75, I-85, and I-16.

Black Friday shopping traffic

If you’re braving the crowds for Black Friday deals, traffic near Lenox Mall, Perimeter Mall, and the Mall of Georgia is expected to be heavy this year. The busiest times typically fall between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., depending on the location.

Driving Safety Reminders

  • Buckle up: Seat belts save lives, and yes, they stretch—even after a big Thanksgiving meal!
  • Stay alert: Keep your eyes on the road and avoid distractions like your phone.
  • Plan ahead: Use 511ga.org or the 511 Georgia app to check real-time traffic and road conditions.

If you see emergency or utility vehicles on the side of the road, remember to move over one lane if it’s safe. If not, slow down below the speed limit.
