Traveling for holidays? | What to know before heading to Atlanta's airport

Over 3.3 million people are expected to travel to, from, or through Atlanta from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2.

ATLANTA — Heading to the airport for a little holiday travel this year? Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is making sure passengers are aware of what to expect and how to ensure they make it to their flight on time.

Over 3.3 million people are expected to travel to, from, or through Atlanta from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2, according to airport officials.

That first day is expected to be the busiest day.

How early should I arrive?

If you are flying domestically, airport officials recommend you arrive at least two and a half hours early. But, if you are flying internationally, you should try to get to the airport three hours early.

Have a wheelchair? The airport recommends you add an additional 30 minutes to that arrival time.

You can check the airport website to get current information about parking, security wait times, and more.

What can I bring?

It's always a good idea to check your luggage before arriving. You can view a full breakdown of items not to bring here.

Security checkpoint project

All security lanes are now open and available with the completion of the airport's Main Security Checkpoint project, according to officials.

Originally slated for April of next year, the improvements are now completed way ahead of schedule for the influx in holiday travel.

The project itself replaced 19 legacy security screening machines with new Analogic CT machines. There is also new technology for detecting threats at baggage and security checkpoints.
