Smart bathrooms come to the world's busiest airport

The new system is designed to reduce waiting lines and crowds in restrooms throughout Concourse B.

ATLANTA -- A new, smart restroom system is being installed throughout Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, aimed at making those awkward bathroom stall encounters a thing of the past at the world's busiest terminal.

As part of the airport’s $6 billion modernization program, Infax, a 48-year-old Atlanta based data company managing airport analytics and Tooshlights, a Los Angeles-based company that provides smart bathroom technology, have implemented the new system throughout Concourse B.

The smart restroom system works similarly to modern parking garage lights, notifying travelers when a stall is ready to be used. Feedback data from every passenger’s usage will be tracked and stored by Infax and the system will provide real-time data so that staff can be alerted when the restrooms need to be cleaned.

Displays are installed outside each restroom that will show how many stalls are available at-a-glance. The system provides a real-time feed to managers and operators so they can manage traffic flow and handle maintenance. (Story continues below gallery.)

“Clean and efficient restrooms rank a top priority for travelers, and airports are responding as an overall goal to enhance the passenger experience,” said Tracy Davis, Infax's vice president of sales and business development. “Atlanta is ranked the busiest airport in the word, serves over 100 million passengers a year, averaging 275,000 a day."

Infax technology is operating in more than 65 airports across the U.S.

“The Atlanta Airlines Terminal Corporation has been working for a couple of years to reinvent the restroom experience for our passengers and create the smart restroom of the future. We are excited to incorporate Infax and Tooshlights technology into our overall vision of enhancing the restroom servicescape for our quest and passengers”, said Kofi Smith, president and CEO of AATC.

So far, the new system has gotten at least one rave review on social media:
