Southwest flight makes unexpected Atlanta pitstop due to mechanical issue: FAA

Southwest said that the 122 passengers were put on a different aircraft and that the other was taken out of service for a maintenance review.

ATLANTA — Holiday travelers had to make an unexpected stop in Atlanta on Friday due to a mechanical issue, according to Southwest Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The flight from Chicago was headed to Fort Myers, Florida, when the FAA said the pilot declared a failure in one of its engines, forcing them to land at Atlanta-Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.

Southwest said that the 122 passengers were put on a different aircraft and that the other was taken out of service for a maintenance review.

The delay lasted about three hours. The airline said no injuries were reported.

"We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate our Crew’s dedication to operating out of an abundance of caution and safety," an airline spokesperson said in part.
