ATLANTA — A United Airlines flight that took off from Charlotte on Wednesday morning and was bound for Houston diverted and landed in Atlanta after a "possible engine issue," the FAA said.

The FAA said United Flight 575 landed safely at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport around 8 a.m.

The landing came after the crew reported the possible issue. In a statement, United called the issue a mechanical one and said passengers deplaned normally after the landing.

"Passengers will continue to Houston onboard a different aircraft, and are scheduled to arrive at 11:30 a.m.," the statement said.

The FAA said it will investigate the incident.

Fight tracking accounts on social media reported the flight declared an emergency before diverting to Atlanta.
