Ground stop lifted at Atlanta airport

The stoppage was issued as severe weather bared down on metro Atlanta.

ATLANTA — UPDATE: Just around 6:20 p.m., the ground stop was lifted. The line of storms is still moving through the area. The original story appears below.

Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson is under a ground stop as a line of severe weather ripped across north Georgia before moving into the metro Atlanta area.

11Alive confirmed the ground stop just around 4:40 p.m.; there was no immediate information on when the stop would be lifted, though flight-tracking website Flight Aware showed that inbound flights were being held at their origins until 5:45 p.m.

So far, no cancellations have been reported, but 71 flights appeared to have been delayed, according to Flight Aware's misery map that tracks delays.

11Alive's weather camera at the airport was shaking violently as winds picked up and darkening clouds moved into the area. Planes could also be seen just sitting on the runway.

Metro Atlanta and north Georgia began feeling the impact of strong storms Friday afternoon, with a widespread tornado watch for the region until 8 p.m. Tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings had already been issued, with reports of damage and power outages in Floyd County.

Storms will be capable of producing heavy rain, frequent lightning, and damaging winds will continue to move through the metro area until the evening hours.
