Severe weather around north Georgia, metro Atlanta | Live updates

ATLANTA — In the midst of a heat wave descending on north Georgia, some counties have seen severe thunderstorm warnings on Tuesday.

Additionally, a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. was issued for much of metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

It originally included much of metro Atlanta and north Georgia but in the afternoon was pared back to include just parts of the outer southwest metro, including Carroll, Heard, Coweta, Troup, Meriwether, Pike and Lamar counties.

The reason for this sizzling middle of June is a big heat dome building in from the west. The jet stream pushes north, trapping the southeast in an extended stretch of hazy, hot and humid afternoons with limited afternoon storms.

So far thunderstorms have developed in the farther edges of north and east Georgia.
