ATLANTA — Atlanta is in need of rainfall. After experiencing a rain deficit for the month of November, abnormally dry conditions have developed in north Georgia.
If we don't reverse the trend, a drought could be on the way for the Peach State.
Luckily, rain is coming. Atlanta will likely pick up more rain over the next 7 days than we saw in the entire month of November. This is thanks to a pattern flip.
The tail half of the month of November was bone dry. Fronts that passed through Atlanta were moisture-starved, not giving us any decent rainfall. This week, Georgia is in the path of a more active southern storm track with better moisture. We will have an unsettled week ahead.
In total, the region could pick up one to three inches of rain, with some locally higher amounts likely. Below shows the rain outlook from the Weather Prediction Center for the next week.
The highest rain totals will be north of Atlanta. Parts of the mountains could exceed three inches of rain. Even on the south side of town, a good one to two inches of rain can be expected.
When does the rain arrive? Rain chances have already begun to increase as of Sunday, Dec. 5 with a 30% chance for Atlanta.
As a cold front swings in Monday afternoon, a line of showers and isolated storms will move through the area. This will produce between a tenth of an inch and a half an inch of rain for north Georgians.
Our next wave with higher rain chances arrives late Tuesday into Wednesday. Then models show another system bringing showers Friday, followed by showers and storms next Saturday.
What to take away from this pattern change? It won't rain all week nonstop at your house, but Georgians do have some much-needed rain coming. On the flip side, it will be more gloomy of a week with more clouds instead of the blue skies and record highs from last week.
