ATLANTA — The annual solar eclipse will occur early in the afternoon on Saturday in north Georgia. Even though we won't be in the path of totality, which is where the sun will be completely covered, we will still have partial blockage of the sun.
Of course, you will want to be sure to not look up at the sun as it could damage your eyes. One of the safest ways to experience the eclipse is to build an eclipse viewing box.
To build an eclipse viewing box you will need scissors, white paper, a shoe box, a pencil, foil and tape.
Start by cutting two small squares, or holes in one side of the box. These should be on the same side.
Then, take some tape and attach it to the piece of foil you cut out.
You will take that foil and tape it to the outside of the box, completely covering one of the holes you made.
Take your pencil and poke a small hole in the foil so it is a circle.
You will then add tape to the white sheet of paper and attach it to the inside, opposite area of the box from where you made the holes.
Put your lid back on the box so it fits snug and no outside light can come in.
Now, your solar eclipse viewer is ready for use.
Head outside and turn your back to the sun as the eclipse is occurring. You will want to look through the hole that isn't covered up by the foil and leave enough room over your shoulder so the sunlight is capable of hitting the hole covered up by the foil.
Inside the box, you will see the sunbeam shining through the hole in the foil onto the paper on the opposite side. The light should make a perfect circle at first.
As the eclipse is occurring, you will notice the Moon's shadow moving across the sunbeam, allowing you to safely view and experience the eclipse.
