School systems closing due to possible severe weather threat Thursday

11Alive will update this story if more districts decide to close.

As Sally makes its way towards Georgia, some school systems have decided to close due to the possible severe weather threat on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020.

If more districts decide to close, 11Alive will update this story.

The district said morning travel could be unsafe with the possibility of heavy rain and flash flooding. Remote learning for students in grades 6-12 will continue Thursday; remote learning is canceled for K-5 students.

Troup County posted on it's website that they are not requiring a virtual learning day, because they can't guarantee families will have power to use technology.

Hurricane Sally made landfall Wednesday morning as a Category 2 storm near Gulf Shores, Ala. the National Hurricane Center reported. It was sustaining maximum winds of 105 mph as it made landfall.

In Georgia, we'll expect some heavy rain. Some areas could see 3-6 inches of rain. We will also be monitoring winds of 15-25 mph with higher gusts. There is also a storm risk. Isolated tornadoes are possible with a remnant tropical low moving through. That storm risk will be mainly in central and south Georgia.
