SNELLVILLE, Ga. — A video out of Gwinnett County is showing the truly frightening - and fascinating - power of nature as a lightning bolt exploded out of the sky.
The video was caught on the dash camera of an officer with the Snellville Police Department as lightning struck the top of a power pole, causing an explosion at the top.
And this isn't some old file footage from an incident years ago. It happened just days earlier on Friday as a storm moved through the area.
It's also interesting to examine the video in slow motion where it appears a much quicker strike initially hit the post less than a second before it exploded. The more "picturesque" lightning strike occurs not far away in the video at around the same time.
In this case, we're fortunate to say that this blindingly bright light, albeit quick, light show didn't hurt anyone, even though someone was driving by at that exact moment.
However, the city wasn't quite as lucky a week earlier. Storms around that time brought at least one lightning strike that actually knocked out administrative phone lines with the police department. Again, no injuries were reported in this case but it definitely wasn't helpful.
