EF-1 tornado touched down near Riverdale, uprooted and snapped trees, National Weather Service says

The weather agency said that the tornado had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Weather officials say an EF-1 tornado briefly touched down in Clayton County, as a line of storms moved through the metro Atlanta area early Monday morning.

According to a National Weather Service survey team, the tornado is believed to have touched down minutes after 6 a.m. along Bethsaida Road, near the intersection of Lakefield Forrest Drive. The weather agency said that the tornado had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph.

Crews said they saw several trees uprooted or snapped next to some homes, and several power lines were brought down. It's then believed the tornado continued southeast - where it reached "max intensity" as it crossed Fayetteville Road. That's where crews found more snapped and uprooted trees, some of which fell onto homes along Bethaven Road and Zebulun Court. The tornado lifted before it reached Monarch Drive, traveling just about three-quarters of a mile, according to the National Weather Service.
